Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry

Hannah Pratt

My take on Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry?

Sometimes, it's bullshit.

Stay with me: I don't think it should be.

In fact, I think Community Over Competition is the thing that makes group fitness magic. It's what quiets the ego, centers our clients/riders, and lifts everyone up.

It moves our entire industry forward and therefore helps more people have the lifechanging impact we know is possible through group fitness.

But sometimes, people use it as a slogan for a shirt without actually embodying what it MEANS to say, Community>Competition.

Or, we ourselves can slide into competing with our own team, being passive-aggressive when riders/clients share they're going to another studio, or fail to celebrate the achievements of others.

EPISODE OVERVIEW:

In this episode, I give an update on my life for the last 8 weeks (PS, it's been rocky... and I might cry for just a second in the intro), share where I'm going, and a metaphor for coming out of the darkness.

Around 11 minutes in, I share my TOP takeaways for embodying Community over Competition even when your ego tries to push you into comparing and competing with others.

Top takeaways:

  • Celebrate your team (instructors). Their success doesn't mean you won't have it too.
  • Encourage your riders/clients to expand their modalities and workouts
  • Plan a group workout to go to another studio with your riders, instructors, etc.
  • Allow yourself to be inspired by the success of others
  • As a studio: don't market your community by encouraging others to leave the ones they're currently a part of (a la SoulCycle/Peloton)
